HYDRATION

POWERAMP® RAPID HYDRATION IS A LOW SUGAR, ELECTROLYTE DRINK THAT ASSISTS THE ATHLETE TO IMPROVE SPORTS PERFORMANCE AND RECOVERY THROUGH HYDRATION.

POWERAMP® – Rapid Hydration is the ideal hypotonic electrolyte re-hydration drink. Developed originally for elite cyclists and triathletes; it is suitable for all high-intensity sport and professional training programmes.

THE PROBLEM

The loss of body fluid caused by exercise-induced results in reduced performance.

Taking water is too slow to meet the hydration needs of an athlete. Many athletes loss water faster than they can absorb it from the stomach into the intestine.

  • Dehydration by as little as 2% can decrease performance by 6-7% during 5km and 10km races   (Armstrong (1985))

  • Dehydration by 3% will reduce overall performance by more than 10% (most aspects, including mental acuity)  (Maughan (2000))

High sugar, fluid replacement drinks provide too many calories and their electrolyte composition is generally not optimal for rapid hydration. 

WHY HYDRATION IS IMPORTANT:

Hydration is responsible for three primary effects on the high-performance athlete.

  • Exercise performance
  • Maintenance of normal body temperature
  • Mental acuity and sharpness

Our product has been formulated to either maintain or optimise these three physiological conditions better than water alone.

Typical sweat loss in an athlete is 1.5 -3.0 litres per hour.

Compare this with the rate of gastric emptying of water alone, which is 0.8 -1.3 litres per hour because just drinking water alone will only slow the rate of dehydration.

POWERAMP® “Rapid Hydration”  dramatically increases the rate of gastric emptying from the stomach to the intestine compared to water alone, which means you can absorb fluids faster than the rate you lose fluid due to sweat loss. This further improves the fluid balance with both facilitated diffusion and passive osmosis (hypotonic beverage).

You can achieve better sports performance from focusing on better fluid  than you can get from consuming a high calorie – high sugar sports drink.

HOW CAN YOU MAXIMISE HYDRATION?

We use “multiple components” carbohydrate sources, which means the carbohydrate will be absorbed at varying rates and this is important as it provides a consistent and sustained energy source to power the active uptake of water into the tissues.

The specific glucose-fructose combination or ratio used in POWERAMP® RAPID HYDRATE, results in significantly improved power performance, running time, time to fatigue during cycling, and a perceived higher level of exertion during both strength and endurance exercises.

IMPORTANCE OF SODIUM

Many products on the market that purport to help with hydration and electrolyte balance contain a significant carbohydrate (CHO) load in order to also be seen as a viable fuel source and to be palatable. Often these sports drinks contain too little sodium to effectively optimise the facilitated diffusion of intestinal enterocytes or to replace sweat salt losses. Sodium loss through sweating ranges between 0.8 – 4.0g/hr. These high CHO drinks 4-7% carbohydrate actually slow gastric emptying and can inhibit passive osmosis at higher CHO concentrations.

GASTRIC EMPTYING

The amount of carbohydrate in POWERAMP® RAPID HYDRATE is low when compared to many high sugar sports drinks but has been optimized to deliver enough carbohydrate to trigger the relaxation of the valve at the base of the stomach (called the pyloric sphincter) thereby promoting a greater volume of liquid to be absorbed through the small intestine.
